Aerial photography and video in Plymouth

Plymouth's naval waterfront, its regenerated dockside developments and its streets between the Hoe and Devonport give aerial photography a scope few small towns can offer.

A city built on ridges, facing a working Sound

Plymouth is built across a series of limestone ridges between the Plym and the Tamar, so its streets climb and drop sharply between the waterfront and the higher suburbs, and that shape is far easier to read from above than from any single vantage point on the ground. Plymouth Hoe, the open grassland above the Sound, gives a natural elevated foreground for wider aerial shots of the harbour and the naval anchorage beyond, a view that has defined the city's image for generations without ever quite being captured in full from a camera at ground level.

The housing stock spans a wide range in one city: surviving Victorian terraces around the Hoe, Stoke and Mutley, a largely rebuilt post-war centre, extensive post-war estates further out, and modern waterfront apartments at Royal William Yard and Millbay. That range means a single shoot can cover very different property types and buyer audiences without leaving the city boundary.

Developers, agents and a harbour that photographs as a place, not a building

Royal William Yard and Millbay are two of the South West's most visible waterfront regeneration schemes, and developers marketing new phases there need imagery that shows a building's relationship to the water, the marina and the wider Sound, not just its facade. Aerial stills and 6K video do that in a way ground photography cannot, particularly for apartments where the view itself is part of what is being sold.

The Barbican and Sutton Harbour, Plymouth's old fishing quarter, work the same way for a different audience: restaurants, event venues and heritage attractions that trade on the harbour setting benefit from a shot that shows the boats, the quayside and the historic street pattern together, giving a sense of place that a single interior or street-level photo cannot.

Plymouth Sound was designated England's first National Marine Park in 2023, a status that put a marketing spotlight on the water itself rather than only the buildings around it. Sailing schools, boat charter operators and marine attractions within the park boundary have good reason to commission aerial stills and video that show the Sound in full, the anchorages, the breakwater and the coastline together, rather than a single boat or jetty on its own.

Flying near an active naval base

Devonport, on the Tamar side of the city, is one of the largest naval bases in Western Europe and sits inside controlled airspace, so any booking near the dockyard is planned and cleared with that restriction in mind well before the shoot, rather than treated as routine city flying. It is one of the more sensitive sites in the network's coverage area, and getting the airspace right matters more here than in almost any other town on this list.

Away from Devonport, most of the city sits in open, uncontrolled airspace, since Plymouth's old civic airport closed in 2011, which makes the rest of the waterfront and the surrounding suburbs comparatively straightforward to cover in the same booking. Plymouth is also open to south-westerly gales coming straight off the Channel, with salt-laden wind reaching well inland, so exposed shoots on the Hoe or along the waterfront are planned around calmer conditions rather than locked to one fixed date.

Behind every shoot

What Plymouth clients are actually buying

CAA registered

Operator ID and Flyer ID held, plus the A2 Certificate of Competency. Every flight is planned to the rules that apply to the site, and the paperwork is available before the visit if your agent, venue or planning team wants it.

100 megapixel camera

A DJI Mavic 4 Pro with a Hasselblad camera and 6K video. The resolution is what lets a still be cropped hard for a brochure detail shot and still hold together on a large screen or in print.

Edited and licensed

Images are colour graded and cropped before delivery, not sent raw off the card. Every set comes with a licence for your own use, so you are not paying again to put the photograph in a listing or a campaign.

Insured with Coverdrone

Full commercial cover for the operation. Certificates go to agents, venues and marketing teams as a matter of course, without anyone having to chase for them.
